On demonstrative pronouns.

Many languages, including English, make a two-way distinction between demonstratives. One set of demonstratives is proximal, indicating objects close to the speaker (this/these), and the other series is distal, indicating objects far away from the speaker (that/those).


You use THIS/THESE with SINGULAR nouns. For example:

THIS is my friend.



And THESE/THOSE you use with PLURAL nouns...

THAT is my friend.
